Welcome to the second entry in our series of recap articles for the biggest Instagram updates in 2021. Despite the ongoing pandemic, Instagram continued rolling out several updates last year to improve user experience on the platform.
For this article, we will review some of the most significant Instagram updates from April to June 2021. The second quarter of 2021 introduced us to fascinating features that keep users engaged, address racial bias issues, and improve account security and safety.
Let us take a closer look.
Instagram Introduces Caption Stickers, Option To Turn Off Audio and Camera During Live Videos, Remix Options For Reels, And Instagram Insider
Stories Caption Sticker
As a creator/ business, the captions sticker will help you send your message across your audience, even if they mute their audio while watching. Unfortunately, caption stickers were only available for English-speaking countries, but Instagram planned to expand the update by including other languages and countries in the future.

Turn Off Audio and Video on Instagram Live
When we go live on Instagram, there are instances when we want to mute our microphones to prevent something embarrassing or confidential from getting broadcasted to our audience. Some of us are uncomfortable with our cameras on but still wish to harness the engaging powers of doing an Instagram live.
Instagram understands people’s hesitations, so the platform decides to roll out a feature to make them more comfortable when going live.
“Have you ever wanted to turn off your video or audio when you’re Live?? now you can. Hopefully, this gives you more flexibility and lessens any pressure to look or sound a certain way during a Live,” Instagram Head Adam Mosseri tweeted.

Remix Option For Reels
You will get a notification every time someone remixes your video. The remix option is available on public accounts. However, you also have the choice to turn off the remix button if you want to.
To use the remix option, click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the reels you want to remix. If you view the Reel from the dedicated Reel’s tab, you will find the three dots at the bottom corner of the video.
Next, click the “remix this reel” button. If you do not see this button, the user might have turned off the remix option.
After that, the reels will open on the left side of the screen, and your video will be on the right side. Click the reels button at the bottom of your screen to start recording.

The publication also includes frequently asked questions about the platform, such as how to get your Instagram profile verified and hashtag inquiries.

Instagram Launches Reels and Live Insights, Turn-Off Like Option, And Second Equity Update
Reels and Live insights
Reels and Live have become an integral feature for businesses and creators on Instagram. So, it just sounds right to measure insights on these features so users can evaluate their top-performing content.
Now, creators and businesses can track their Reels and Live performance to see which content is gaining most engagement and which are not.

Second Equity Update To Address Racial Bias
The platform is also trying to be more transparent about posting reach and restrictions to address issues that BIPOC creators are getting suppressed or “shadowbanned” on the platform.
“Turn-off” Like Counts Option
To get past the herd bias and encourage people to focus on the content instead of the number of likes, Instagram experimented with turning off the like counts for a small group of people.
Some people found it helpful, while others complained that it is now hard to track popular posts.
To keep everyone happy, Instagram comes up with a “turn-off like counts” option.
The feature will let users choose whether to see the like counts on others’ posts. It allows users to turn off the like counts on their posts, too.
In April 2021, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri said via Tweet that they are still testing the feature and will also explore a similar option for Facebook.

Instagram Rolls Out Security Checkup, Explains How The Algorithm Works And Changes The Way They Recommend Videos
Security Checkup
Security Checkup serves as a guide and instruction for users to protect their accounts. The checkup includes reviewing your profile information, checking your login activity, updating and setting up account-recovery contact information (like phone number and email), and verifying the accounts using your login data.

Instagram Changes The Way They Recommend Videos
Based on Instagram’s research, most people go to the platform to get entertained. Because of this, Instagram now favors recommending video content based on people’s interests.
Video recommendations are now curated based on topics, similar to how Tiktok and Youtube display their feeds. This new feature helps businesses and creators to reach more potential customers and target audiences.
Instagram Explains How The Algorithm Works
In a very detailed Instagram update, the platform breaks down some of the ranking factors for Stories, Feed, Reels, and IGTV. It also answers one of the most asked questions: how do they rank the explore page?
The main takeaway of the article is that Instagram does not just have one but several algorithms to predict what people are most interested in. They take note of signals such as how popular a post and its creator are and the user’s history of interaction and activity on the platform.

Those are the biggest updates in the second quarter of 2021. Watch out for our remaining recap articles so you would not miss any of the significant features that could help you succeed and become an instagram influencer.
